Principal Function:


The Deaf Pastor is responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive, salvation-focused ministry for the Deaf congregation and their families. The individual called to this position will disciple and equip Deaf members to share the Word and Love of Christ through Bible studies and will guide the congregation in matters of faith, providing pastoral care and ensuring the spiritual well-being of members. The Deaf Pastor reports directly to the Senior Pastor.

 

Deaf Ministry Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, and deliver evolving ministries for the Deaf congregation and their families.
  • Establish short- and long-term goals for the Deaf ministry.
  • Plan and conduct outreach events to connect with unchurched individuals in the community and other Deaf ministries in the region.
  • Prepare and deliver sermons and Bible studies for Deaf worship services, expressing the truth as revealed in Scripture and bearing witness to Jesus Christ, who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”
  • Lead the Deaf congregation in the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
  • Identify and develop members of the Deaf congregation to teach Bible studies.
  • Conduct weddings and funerals.
  • Visit members and prospects, including those who are hospitalized, sick, or homebound.
  • Provide individual counseling as needed.
  • Plan and deliver discipleship programs and family enrichment events.
  • Request, coordinate, and evaluate interpreters as needed, providing feedback and organizing training opportunities to develop new interpreters.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Plan and manage the annual budget for the Deaf ministry.
  • Participate in professional development programs, seminars, and workshops.
  • Coordinate with other staff to meet the needs and mission of the church.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Senior Pastor.

 

Qualifications:

  • Meets the biblical qualifications for pastoral service as detailed in 1 Timothy 3:1-13.
  • Applicants may be Deaf or hearing.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Prior experience in Deaf ministry.
  • Adherence to the Baptist Faith and Message (2000).
  • Bachelor’s degree in biblical studies preferred; willingness to pursue a degree if not already obtained.
  • Ability to communicate God’s Word through teaching and preaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of all ages, both Deaf and hearing.
  • Strong servant leadership skills.
  • Exemplifies a positive Christian attitude in all interactions.
  • Exercises discretion and wisdom in handling confidential matters.
About Parkwood Baptist Church

Parkwood Baptist Church has a 75-year history of mission-focused service to the cities of Concord and Kannapolis, as well as the greater Cabarrus County area. We are a multi-generational church with 500+ weekly attendees and a Deaf ministry that has been a key part of our identity for nearly 40 years. The Deaf ministry serves a diverse congregation and averages about 25 weekly attendees with services on Sunday mornings and Bible studies on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. The Deaf ministry integrates with the hearing congregation for worship on the first Sunday morning of each month and is fully included in all other ministries and programs of the church. The Deaf ministry works closely with other Deaf groups from around the state with the goal of reaching the Deaf community with the Gospel of Christ in their heart language.
